Music Painting

So, for our last class, we had a paint to music session. It is consist of 2 sessions, a half is painting to classical music, the other half with modern songs. Painting isn't my thing, but as a design student, I'll have to give in my 100% to try and give in my best. I came unprepared in terms of what I want to do. I brought spray paints and paints along. It is more comfortable for me to use spray paint thats why I brought it. 

First painting (Classical Music)

All the work put into this is purely thought on the spot. I started with brown and added red. I chose blue  to represent how classical music makes you calm, it is also used to accent the whole painting. It would be dull without it.

Second Painting (Modern Music)

I started by painting the top(which was supposed to be the bottom) yellow. I then added a thick layer of black paint. By using a piece of paper, I scrape down the black paint to let it reveal the yellow paint. This technique can be found in most spray painted art.

This is another activity that is totally out of my comfort zone, and it is also my first time painting on a large scale. Listening to music while painting helps me pull more inspirations, not only from what I have in mind, but also what I hear, what I sense. It is another activity that opens up my mind into the things that I can look into for inspiration,

Final class in the class. (Batik Presentation!)

Yeah! We got our batik that we printed back in the workshop! It turned out better than expected. We notice that all the colours fade a little bit but it doesn't really matter. Fact is! We are proud of all our work.

Cutting the original frame to make a new bigger frame is really good idea. Since everything are not align, we folded and adjust the print to align everything up. 

This activity is kinda off my comfort zone. I am less comfortable working with too much colours and painting directly. While dying the batik, I realised that it is possible to make a lot of colours just from  secondary and primary colour. During the presentation, how Ms Lisa taught us to make a bigger frame out of the smaller frames we had was brilliant. I would never thought of doing that.

Batik trip. Part 2.

Today we are going to the trip and print the batik at a Batik shop, Jadi Batek.

We get to watch the pros do it before we start.

This is Canting, the traditional "pencil" for drawing batik. But instead of using lead, wax is being melted and poured into a small well near the tip. The wax prevent the paint to spread over the "drawing".

Batik trip!

We are going to a trip and make my first batik drawing and painting. We did our sketch and had a tutorial with Ms. Lisa. We come up with several ideas and themes. We end up using the theme "Disney Movie characters". We used the stain glass pattern to make it more interesting. We worked in group for this activity.

A2 Size poster print.

More printing!

We are asked to make an A2 sized poster. After thinking and referring to my designs, I decided to stick with the design of my case. I made a new stencil because what I had is too small in ratio to the A2 board. I used the same technique I used in making my case, masking tape and spray-paint. I did a black on white instead of white on black like what I did on the case. 

I measured and made sure that the stencil is in the middle. I did that because my stencil is rectangle-ish and the diagonal line, if extended will meet in the thirds.

Presentation day!

Back again with monograms.

It's presentation day! We presented our items that had been printed. We are asked to choose a spot in the classroom and display them. I tried arranging it at first, but was asked to rearranged by ms. Lisa because it doesn't look really nice.

This is the final arrangement for my display. 

After all these work, I've learnt a couple of things. First, when designing the monogram, using the inspiration for the my reference and developing the idea can make something even more unexpected by people. Second and last, while doing the display, I've learnt that not only the subject/object to display is important, but the arrangement and composition is important as well

More Stencil and Prints!

A week after we finalise our stencil, it is time to print it. We are asked to bring 5 items to print our stencils on. I brought a T-shirt, My laptop's case and hard drive for the first day.

For the T-shirt, I used the screen printing method with fabric paint. Its not perfect but quite good for a first timer I guess.

I used spray paint and masking tape to get this design working. Masking the unwanted parts and using different distance to the case, I am able to get the gradient.

For these 3 I used the stencil and newspaper to mask the sides. As much as I want to stick to black and white theme, gold on black and on silver looks better.
